Comprehensive prenatal, birth, postpartum, and newborn care in your home
We are currently accepting clients. We specialize in informed choice, shared decision-making and the right to self-determination. We believe that pregnancy and birth are normal, physiologic and developmental processes that have a profound impact on a person's life. For planned homebirth, starting your care by the first trimester is preferable, but as scheduling allows, we consider clients coming late to care in the second and third trimesters. Ask us about our availability for your location and due date or other needs.
We provide comprehensive care that includes visits, laboratory testing, routine screening, and counseling at every stage of your pregnancy. Prenatal care is provided in the comfort and privacy of your home. Prenatal visits are usually 30-60 minutes long and occur every six weeks until 28 weeks of pregnancy, every three weeks until 36 weeks of pregnancy and then weekly until the baby arrives. During prenatal visits, in addition to monitoring the health and well being of you and your and baby, we spend a great deal of time getting to know each other, talking about transitions you are experiencing, answering questions and assisting you in making informed choices and identifying community resources.
Labor and Birth
Every labor and birth is unique. Our care is personalized to you and your situation. We encourage you to follow the cues from your body and heart. Either Karen Jefferson or Martine Jean-Baptiste is primary midwife at each birth, bringing along a skilled assistant midwife. When you give birth at home, you may eat and drink and walk freely to facilitate the natural process. Studies show that when you are comfortable and feel safe in your surroundings, you are much less likely to desire pain relief medication. We encourage the use of a doula, birthing tubs and other holistic pain management techiques.
Midwives bring standard equipment with them to every birth, including but not limited to, IVs, medication, resuscitation equipment, suture and local anesthetic.
We provide continuity of care and have relationships with family and obstetrical physicians and hospitals should the need for medical consultation, collaboration or referral arise.
